Review: Powerless by Lauren Roberts

Quick Info:

Book Type: Chapter Book

Target Age: 12-18

Recommended Age: 14-16+

Plot: Paedyn Gray, a thief born without powers in a world ruled by gifted Elites must disguise her ordinary identity to survive. But when she accidentally saves Prince Kai, she’s thrust into the purging trial where she struggles to survive.

Review

It’s not a new story. A society filled with elite powers eradicating all those that are “Ordinary” because they don’t have powers. Paedyn is elected to compete in the city’s annual trials to show off their powers but the catch is that she doesn’t have powers. The male lead on the other hand is a powerful prince whose job is to kill anyone without powers. A romantasy with lots of banter and slow burn. If I read this in high school I would have really enjoyed it.

Opinion

Depending on the child I would recommend this book for teens 14-16+, be sure to check out the rest of the books, Reckless and Fearless, before making your decision.

Content:

  • Some cursing

  • Characters drink alcohol and get slightly drunk

  • Heavy flirtation, relatively clean but there is some touching (neck, hips, hands, cuddling)

  • Characters use suicide capsules

  • A female side character dances with another girl implying a relationship
